TransNusa Expands Regional Network with Two New Bali Routes

TransNusa Airlines has launched two new domestic routes from Bali's Ngurah Rai International Airport, connecting the island to emerging tourism and economic hubs in eastern Indonesia. The carrier now operates services to Waingapu in East Sumba and Wakatobi in Southeast Sulawesi, marking a significant expansion of the airline's regional footprint.

According to Kompas, the inaugural flights departed this week, with the Bali-Waingapu service launching on July 15 and the Bali-Wakatobi route following shortly after. Both flights operated at full capacity, carrying between 70 and 94 passengers on their debut journeys.

Strengthening Eastern Indonesia Connectivity

The expansion brings Bali airport's total domestic flight offerings to 22 routes. Airport General Manager Nugroho Jati emphasized the strategic importance of these additions in his statement this week.

"We congratulate TransNusa on the opening of flights for the Waingapu and Wakatobi routes. These two routes add to the other routes previously operated by TransNusa from and to Bali," Jati said on Thursday, July 16, 2026.

Both destinations represent significant opportunities for tourism and economic development. Wakatobi, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve renowned for its pristine marine biodiversity and diving, has long struggled with limited air accessibility. Waingapu, the capital of East Sumba, offers cultural attractions and emerging tourism infrastructure centered around traditional weaving and dramatic coastal landscapes.

Service Schedule and Aircraft Details

TransNusa operates both routes using Comac ARJ-21 aircraft, a regional jet that combines capacity with fuel efficiency—key factors for serving smaller Indonesian airports.

The Bali-Waingapu route runs four times weekly on Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday. The inaugural service (flight 8B-5652) departed Bali at 8:19 am, arriving in Waingapu at approximately 10:40 am local time with 88 passengers. The return flight (8B-5653) touched down in Bali at 12:24 pm carrying 94 passengers.

The Bali-Wakatobi Matahora route operates three times weekly on Monday, Thursday, and Sunday. The debut flight (8B-5662) left Bali at 8:10 am with 90 passengers, while the return service (8B-5663) landed at 1:32 pm carrying 70 passengers.

Strategic Hub Development

The new routes underscore Bali's position as Southeast Asia's premier aviation hub. Airport officials view the expansion as critical infrastructure development as Indonesia targets growth in regional tourism and inter-island connectivity.

"These two new routes further strengthen the position of I Gusti Ngurah Rai Airport as a strategic air transportation hub, as well as opening easier connectivity access for domestic and international tourists to various destinations in Indonesia," Jati added.

The timing of this expansion comes as Bali airport undergoes major upgrades to accommodate 32 million passengers annually—double its current capacity—reflecting Indonesia's confidence in sustained aviation growth across the archipelago.
