Australian Man Critically Injured After Padel Court Glass Wall Shatters in Canggu

A West Australian visitor narrowly escaped what could have been a fatal accident on February 12 when a 3-meter-high glass perimeter wall shattered during a padel match at Amare Padel Club in Canggu. The incident has raised serious concerns about safety standards at the popular sports facility, with reports of at least seven similar incidents occurring at the same location.

Dee Saban was competing in a recreational match when he collided with the glass wall while attempting to play a shot. The impact caused the wall to disintegrate, sending sharp shards across the court in multiple directions. Emergency responders transported Saban to hospital, where X-rays revealed glass fragments deeply embedded in his shoulder and legs, requiring surgical removal.

Severity of Injuries Sparks Safety Questions

The extent of Saban's injuries highlights the potential lethality of the incident. Speaking to international media outlets including Perth Now and The Daily Mail, Saban described the aftermath as resembling "a crime scene" with blood covering the court.

"Some of the cuts are 5cm deep, and I lost a lot of blood. It's lucky I didn't hit him in the face, which is common in the game. If that had happened, I don't think I would be here now," Saban told The Daily Mail.

The 34-year-old was playing his first competitive match since December, and initially downplayed the severity of his condition. It was only when observing his teammates' shocked expressions as they rushed toward him that he realized the gravity of the situation.

Pattern of Safety Failures Emerges

Most alarming is the revelation that this is not an isolated incident. Following media coverage of the accident, Saban and his wife learned of at least seven previously documented incidents at Amare Padel involving similar glass wall failures. Video evidence reportedly exists documenting these earlier accidents.

The discovery suggests a systemic problem with either the glass specification, installation quality, or maintenance protocols at the facility. Padel courts require specialized tempered glass designed to withstand player impact, and repeated failures indicate a potential defect in materials or structural integrity.

Common Risk in Padel Sports

While collisions with perimeter walls are acknowledged as a normal occurrence in padel—a racquet sport similar to squash—the walls are engineered to absorb impact without shattering. Saban confirmed that striking the walls is a routine part of gameplay, but the structural failure that occurred was entirely unexpected.

The incident underscores the importance of venue safety inspections and proper equipment certification, particularly for facilities catering to international visitors in tourist destinations like Bali.

Broader Implications for Bali Tourism

The case has attracted international attention, with Western Australian media outlets covering the story. For Bali's tourism and sports hospitality sectors, the incident raises questions about safety standards and liability protocols at recreational facilities catering to foreign visitors.

As of publication, the extent of any official investigation or corrective action taken by authorities or the facility operator remains unclear.
