Child Killed in Tragic Accident Involving Father's Dump Truck in Denpasar

A nine-year-old Balinese boy died instantly on Wednesday evening after being struck by a dump truck operated by his own father in the Dauh Puri Kelod district of West Denpasar. The fatal incident has renewed concerns about vehicle safety and supervision in residential areas across Bali.

The accident occurred at 6:00 pm on February 18, 2026, on Jalan Serma Jodog in front of the family home. According to police investigation, the child—identified only by the initials AGS—was playing in front of the parked Toyota Dyna dump truck when his 34-year-old father, identified as ARH, inadvertently struck him while operating the vehicle.

How the Accident Unfolded

Ipda Nila Cahyaning Wisnu of the Denpasar Police Precinct provided details of the sequence of events. The dump truck had been parked on the south side of the road with its tailgate raised. When the father entered the driver's seat and started the engine, he began a series of maneuvers to lower the truck's tailgate—a routine procedure for waste collection vehicles.

"The driver then started the engine, stepped on the clutch, put it in gear, and lowered the tailgate. While the tailgate was lowered, the driver allegedly suddenly released the clutch, causing the vehicle to lurch forward," the officer explained.

The boy, who had been standing directly in front of the truck outside his father's line of sight, was unable to escape the vehicle's path. He was struck and crushed beneath the heavy machinery, suffering fatal head injuries, a fractured right hand, and severe lacerations to his chest.

Medical Response and Investigation

Emergency responders transported the child's body to Denpasar's Main General Hospital (RSUP Prof Ngoerah), though he was pronounced dead at the scene. The Denpasar Police Department has initiated a formal investigation into the incident, with interviews already conducted with the boy's father and eyewitnesses.

At this stage, authorities have not announced whether criminal charges will be filed against the father, who is reportedly devastated by the loss of his son. Police are continuing to examine the circumstances surrounding the accident, including whether negligent vehicle operation contributed to the tragedy.

Safety Concerns in Residential Areas

The incident highlights ongoing risks associated with heavy vehicles operating in proximity to residential neighborhoods where children frequently play. In Bali, as in many parts of Indonesia, waste collection vehicles routinely navigate narrow residential streets, sometimes creating hazardous situations for pedestrians and children.

This tragedy underscores the importance of driver awareness, adequate vehicle supervision, and parental vigilance in areas where commercial vehicles operate regularly.
