Direct Taipei-Bali Air Service Set to Launch in October

Bali is preparing to welcome its first direct flights from Taiwan's capital in years, marking a significant boost for the island's tourism sector. Starlux Airlines will inaugurate the Taipei-Denpasar route on October 1st, 2026, a development that regional officials say will reshape travel patterns between the two destinations.

The announcement came during a meeting between Bali Governor Wayan Koster and David Wen-Chiun Lin, the newly appointed Director General of the Taipei Economic and Trade Office (TETO) in Surabaya, held at the Governor's official residence in Denpasar on September 3rd.

Governor Signals Strong Support for Route

Governor Koster expressed enthusiasm for Starlux's expansion into the Bali market and indicated he plans to attend the inaugural flight ceremony personally. Officials see the direct connection as a critical infrastructure development that will strengthen Bali's competitive position in attracting Taiwanese tourists.

"Air connectivity is a crucial factor in strengthening access to the international tourist market," a statement from the Governor's office noted. "With direct flights available, Taiwanese tourists will no longer need to rely on connecting flights to reach Bali."

Convenience Expected to Boost Taiwan Tourism

The removal of connection requirements addresses a significant friction point for Taiwanese travelers. Currently, visitors from Taiwan must book multi-leg journeys through hub cities like Bangkok or Singapore—a time-consuming and costly alternative that many potential tourists may avoid altogether.

Direct air service is anticipated to increase visitor numbers substantially. Lin expressed optimism about tourism growth, noting the high level of interest among Taiwanese in international travel and the opportunities this presents for Bali to capture greater market share.

Broader Diplomatic Engagement

The flight announcement represents more than just a tourism initiative. The meeting between Governor Koster and the TETO director also addressed broader bilateral relations, including the status of Taiwanese citizens living in or visiting Bali, and ways to deepen economic and cultural ties between the island and Taiwan.

The direct route comes at a strategic time, as Bali continues diversifying its source markets for international visitors. Taiwan has historically been a strong demographic for Bali tourism, with visitors known for extended stays and moderate to high spending patterns.

The route addition reflects Starlux's broader strategy to expand its network beyond Taiwan. The carrier has been gradually increasing regional connectivity, positioning itself as a competitor to established carriers on key Asia-Pacific routes.
