Bali's International Photography Festival Returns for Second Edition

Bali's Premier International Photography Festival Returns with Ambitious Second Edition

Bali is set to host its second international photography festival this June, cementing the island's growing reputation as a cultural destination beyond its beaches and temples. The FOTO Bali Festival will run from June 3 to July 12, 2026, at Nuanu Creative City in Ubud, showcasing curated work from 36 photographers representing 24 countries.

Originally launched in 2025, FOTO Bali Festival has quickly established itself as a significant event in Southeast Asia's contemporary art calendar. This year's expansion reflects growing international interest in photography exhibitions centered on meaningful storytelling and cultural exchange.

Theme Explores Memory and Identity Through Photography

The 2026 edition adopts the theme "Afterimage," inviting photographers to explore how images persist in memory and shape understanding of culture and identity. The curatorial team of Kurniadi Widodo and Putu Sridinari selected artists from nearly 700 international submissions across 80 countries—a significant increase from the inaugural year.

"We want FOTO Bali Festival to open up a wider conversation between photographic practices from different contexts, without geographical or generational boundaries," said Festival Director Kelsang Dolma in a statement, emphasizing the festival's commitment to fostering global dialogue among emerging and established artists.

Bridging Global Photography Communities

Rather than positioning photography as mere documentary, FOTO Bali Festival frames the medium as a lens shaped by personal memory, cultural identity, and the intimate moments of daily life. This philosophical approach has resonated with international photographers seeking platforms that prioritize conceptual depth alongside technical excellence.

The dual-curator model—bringing together Indonesian and international perspectives—ensures the selection process reflects diverse artistic traditions and contemporary practices. This structure allows for more nuanced engagement with themes that might otherwise be interpreted through a single cultural viewpoint.

Nuanu Creative City as Cultural Hub

Hosting the festival at Nuanu Creative City in Ubud positions the event within Bali's established creative ecosystem. The venue, known for supporting contemporary arts initiatives, provides an ideal setting for the month-long exhibition and associated programming, including artist talks, workshops, and collaborative events.

For international visitors and local art enthusiasts, FOTO Bali Festival offers a substantial cultural attraction during the high season. The festival's programming is expected to draw cultural tourists seeking engagement with contemporary artistic practice beyond typical tourist circuits.

Growing Recognition for Bali's Arts Scene

The festival's rapid growth—from inaugural event to international platform in just two years—reflects broader trends of Bali repositioning itself as more than a beach destination. Museums, galleries, and cultural events have increasingly attracted artists and curators from across Asia and beyond, creating a vibrant contemporary arts landscape.

FOTO Bali Festival's success demonstrates audience appetite for exhibitions that blend local and global perspectives while maintaining curatorial rigor. As the festival continues to expand, it may inspire similar international initiatives across Indonesia's cultural centers.
