Denpasar Police HQ Attacked After Red-Light District Crackdown

Denpasar Police Office Attacked Following Sex Worker Crackdown
A violent assault on the Denpasar Public Order Agency (Satpol PP) headquarters early Sunday morning has escalated tensions in Bali's capital following an enforcement operation against alleged sex workers in the notorious Danau Tempe district.
The attack came hours after Satpol PP officers arrested 33 women on suspicion of open solicitation during a late-night raid on Saturday. According to Bali Police spokesman Jansen Avitus Panjaitan, dozens of unidentified assailants stormed the Satpol PP office on Kecubung I Street, demanding the immediate release of the detained women.
Violence and Injuries During 30-Minute Assault
The confrontation lasted approximately 30 minutes, during which assailants vandalized the office and physically attacked staff members. Three of five Satpol PP officers sustained serious injuries.
One officer, identified by initials IKGA, suffered severe head lacerations, a split lip, and facial bruising so severe that he required intensive care at Wangaya Regional Hospital. Four other officers—INB, AAMW, IGATY, and IMW—sustained facial cuts and bruises during the melee.
"There has been an act of vandalism and assault against Satpol PP officers by a group of unidentified individuals at the Denpasar City Satpol PP Office," Panjaitan stated in an official statement to media.
Armed Assailants and Shifting Claims
Details of the incident paint a chaotic scene at the government office. According to Nyoman Sudarsana, Head of Public Order and Community Peace Division at Denpasar Satpol PP, the assailants initially claimed to be military personnel while aggressively shaking the office gate and shouting demands.
The group later altered their account, claiming affiliation with local gangs. Most alarming, one individual allegedly brandished a firearm and pointed it at officers before the group breached the office's perimeter to physically assault staff.
Context: Danau Tempe's Contentious Status
The attack highlights the tensions surrounding Danau Tempe, Denpasar's most visible red-light district. Located in the city center, the area has long been a focal point for police enforcement operations targeting sex workers.
The Saturday night raid resulted in the detention of 33 women primarily on grounds of lacking proper identification documents. This practice—using documentation requirements as a pretext for enforcement—reflects broader Indonesian approaches to managing sex work through regulations rather than legalization.
Implications for Law Enforcement in Bali
The assault raises serious questions about officer safety during enforcement operations and the efficacy of Bali's approach to regulating sex work. The incident suggests that enforcement crackdowns may provoke organized resistance from networks connected to the sex trade.
Authorities have not yet identified or arrested the assailants, and investigations remain ongoing. The attack underscores the challenges Denpasar officials face in balancing public order enforcement with managing the complex social realities surrounding sex work in Bali's largest city.
