Train Collision Near Bekasi Claims 14 Lives

A catastrophic chain-reaction train accident at East Bekasi Station in West Java on Monday evening has claimed at least 14 lives, with dozens more injured. The disaster unfolded when a green-colored electric taxi collided with a commuter train, triggering a fatal sequence of events that culminated in a high-speed intercity train striking a stationary passenger vehicle.

How the Accident Unfolded

According to Franoto Wibowo, Public Relations Manager for KAI Operations Area 1 Jakarta, the incident began at a level crossing near East Bekasi Station when a taxi—reportedly operated by ride-hailing service Xanh SM—attempted to cross the tracks. The vehicle stalled or stopped mid-crossing, colliding with an incoming KRL (Kereta Rel Listrik) commuter train on the Jakarta-bound track.

The initial impact forced the first KRL train to brake suddenly. A second KRL train, also operating on the same line, came to a halt at East Bekasi Station. Minutes later, the Argo Bromo Anggrek—a long-distance intercity train (KAJJ)—traveling behind the stationary commuter train struck its rear with devastating force.

"The KRL stopped, and the Argo Bromo train was behind it," explained Wibowo, describing the tragic sequence.

Scale of Devastation

The impact proved catastrophic. The front section of the intercity train penetrated the women-only carriage of the second KRL train, causing extensive structural damage. By Tuesday morning, 28 April, authorities confirmed 14 deaths—all female passengers—with 84 others receiving treatment for injuries ranging from minor to severe.

Anne Purba, Vice President of Corporate Communications for Indonesian Railways (KAI), released an update at 8:45 AM on Tuesday confirming the death toll and noting that rescue operations remained ongoing.

Search and Rescue Complete

The National Search and Rescue Agency completed its evacuation and recovery operations by 8 AM on Tuesday morning. M Syafii, the agency's head, credited the successful conclusion of the operation to cooperation between multiple emergency response organizations.

"Thanks to the cooperation of all elements, we were able to carry out the search-and-rescue operation as we had hoped, and it was completed this morning at 8 AM," Syafii stated.

Service Disruptions Ongoing

The accident has severely disrupted rail services in the Bekasi region. East Bekasi Station remains temporarily closed to passenger boarding and disembarkation. KRL commuter services have been rerouted to Bekasi Station, while intercity KAJJ operations are limited and operating on restricted schedules.

The level crossing where the initial taxi-train collision occurred will likely become a focal point for safety review, raising questions about crossing safety mechanisms and automated warning systems in the region.

This article was updated based on reporting from Indonesia Expat. The incident represents one of Indonesia's most serious rail accidents in recent years and is expected to trigger a comprehensive investigation into both the immediate causes and underlying safety protocols.
