Mayapada Hospital Introduces Advanced PET-CT and SPECT-CT Technology

Mayapada Hospital Brings Advanced Nuclear Medicine Technology to Indonesia

Mayapada Hospital Jakarta Selatan has introduced cutting-edge PET-CT and SPECT-CT scanning technologies, marking a significant advancement in cancer diagnosis capabilities across Indonesia. The hospital, part of Mayapada Healthcare (IDX: SRAJ), says these diagnostic tools will enable more accurate detection and treatment planning for cancer patients without requiring overseas referrals.

The new nuclear medicine imaging systems, sourced from German medical technology company Siemens Healthineers, operate at a molecular and cellular level—detecting disease activity rather than just physical changes. This represents a leap forward for Indonesian healthcare, as such technology remains relatively rare across the nation's hospital network.

How PET-CT and SPECT-CT Differ From Standard Imaging

While conventional CT scans show physical structures and tumours, PET-CT and SPECT-CT scans visualise cellular metabolism and activity. This means doctors can identify cancer in its earlier stages and monitor treatment response more effectively. For patients, the benefits are substantial: sharper diagnostic images, significantly lower radiation exposure, and faster examination times.

"Mayapada Healthcare's investment in advanced diagnostic tools such as PET-CT and SPECT-CT is not merely about adding new technology, but forms part of our commitment to building a comprehensive and modern Oncology Center ecosystem," said Navin Sonthalia, President Director and CEO of Mayapada Healthcare.

Reducing Medical Tourism and Treatment Costs

One of the hospital's primary motivations is keeping cancer patients within Indonesia's borders. Historically, Indonesians with complex oncology cases have sought treatment abroad, draining resources and separating patients from their families. By offering world-class diagnostic capabilities locally, Mayapada aims to change this trajectory.

The introduction of these technologies also reduces the need for repeat examinations. Patients can progress more quickly from diagnosis through to treatment, streamlining care pathways and potentially lowering overall treatment costs.

Part of Broader Expansion Strategy

This investment aligns with Mayapada Hospital Jakarta Selatan's ongoing expansion, particularly through the development of Tower 3. The hospital already operates as Indonesia's largest private hospital within a single location and is positioning itself as the nation's premier advanced cancer care centre. With integrated diagnostic, treatment, and rehabilitation services under one roof, the facility aims to offer a seamless patient experience.

The addition of nuclear medicine capabilities strengthens this ecosystem further, allowing oncologists to tailor treatment protocols based on precise molecular imaging data rather than estimates from conventional scans alone.

Implications for Bali Healthcare Access

For residents of Bali and eastern Indonesia, the availability of these technologies in Jakarta may improve access to specialist care without international travel. However, accessibility and cost remain potential barriers, as advanced diagnostic services typically command premium pricing at private hospitals.
