Ascott Bali Hotels Launch Inclusive Accessibility Initiative

Ascott Bali Hotels Unite for Inclusive Accessibility Initiative

On Global Accessibility Awareness Day 2026, ten Ascott-managed properties across Bali launched a collaborative initiative called "Speak Without Sound," signaling a broader commitment to inclusivity within the island's hospitality sector. The program, held at Harris Hotel Kuta Tuban on May 21, brought together hotel professionals and community organizations to bridge communication gaps and foster genuine understanding.

Breaking Down Barriers Through Sign Language Training

The centerpiece of the initiative was a hands-on workshop introducing hospitality staff to Bahasa Isyarat Indonesia (BISINDO), the standardized Indonesian sign language. Rather than a superficial awareness campaign, the program immersed hotel workers in the lived experiences of Bali's Deaf community, creating what organizers describe as a "warm and interactive learning environment."

This approach reflects a significant shift in how Bali's tourism industry approaches accessibility—moving beyond compliance checkboxes to genuine empathy-building among frontline staff who interact with guests daily.

A Coalition for Change in Hospitality

The "Speak Without Sound" initiative brought together an impressive coalition of stakeholders:

  • Ten Ascott properties: Citadines Berawa Beach Bali Resort, Harris Hotel Kuta Tuban, Harris Hotel & Residences Riverview Kuta, Harris Hotel & Residences Sunset Road, Harris Hotel & Conventions Denpasar, Harris Hotel Seminyak, Fox Hotel Jimbaran Beach, Yello Hotel Kuta Beachwalk, Maison Aurelia Sanur, and Pop! Hotel Kuta Beach
  • PUSBISINDO Bali (Indonesian Deaf Association)
  • Matahati Kita Poleng Foundation Bali

This partnership demonstrates how international hospitality brands can leverage their Bali operations to drive social impact while improving service standards for guests with disabilities.

Part of Ascott's Broader Social Commitment

The initiative aligns with Ascott International's CARES pillar, a corporate social responsibility framework emphasizing community engagement and sustainability. For Bali—a destination heavily reliant on tourism—such programs have particular significance in setting industry standards and challenging lingering accessibility gaps.

"Speak Without Sound" goes beyond being a campaign. Ascott Indonesia Area Bali invites hospitality professionals to embrace inclusivity as an integral part of how we serve, interact, and understand one another with sincerity.

Why This Matters for Bali Tourism

Bali receives millions of international visitors annually, yet accessibility remains inconsistent across accommodations and attractions. By training hotel staff to communicate effectively with Deaf guests and other visitors with disabilities, Ascott properties are establishing a precedent for the broader tourism industry.

The initiative also highlights an often-overlooked demographic: disabled travelers who spend on par with other international visitors but frequently encounter barriers when traveling in Indonesia. Better accessibility training directly improves the experience for these guests while expanding Bali's appeal as an inclusive destination.

Looking Forward

As Global Accessibility Awareness Day gains recognition worldwide, initiatives like "Speak Without Sound" position Bali's hospitality sector as forward-thinking and socially conscious. The question now is whether other major hotel chains operating on the island will follow suit, turning one coalition's efforts into an industry-wide transformation.
