Russian Businessman Kidnapped in Bali, Tortured for Crypto Access
Russian Businessman Kidnapped, Forced to Surrender Cryptocurrency Assets
A 41-year-old Russian national has reported being kidnapped and held for 30 hours in South Kuta, during which his captors allegedly tortured him and forced him to surrender access to his cryptocurrency accounts. The incident, which occurred on July 2, has prompted authorities to launch a manhunt for the perpetrators.
Abduction and Detention
According to reports from Kompas and NusaBali, the victim, identified only by the initials AI, was intercepted at approximately 9:35 p.m. on Jalan Uluwatu in the Pecatu area of South Kuta while returning home by motorcycle after finishing work at a restaurant. Two masked assailants, operating a black Nissan Serena, forced him off the road and restrained him with plastic handcuffs before covering his head.
The kidnappers transported their captive to a two-story house, where they held him for roughly 30 hours. During this period, AI was subjected to physical violence, including repeated punches and kicks, as his captors demanded passwords and access credentials to his cryptocurrency holdings.
Theft and Home Invasion
Beyond the cryptocurrency extortion, the assailants stole the victim's Xiaomi smartphone during the abduction. More troublingly, they obtained keys to his rented villa from his motorcycle, which they subsequently used to break into his residence and seize a second mobile phone—apparently to facilitate further access to his digital assets.
"We have received a report regarding the alleged kidnapping and extortion of a Russian citizen. The operational team in the field is currently gathering all evidence and clues to identify the perpetrators," confirmed Chief Senior Commissioner Ariasandy of Bali Police in a statement issued on July 9.
Release and Investigation
On Saturday, July 4, at approximately 4:00 a.m.—some 30 hours after his capture—the victim was abandoned on the roadside of Jalan Prabu Udayana. He immediately reported the incident to police.
Bali Police have launched an active investigation to identify and apprehend the perpetrators. The case highlights growing concerns about organized criminal activity targeting foreign nationals in Bali, particularly those involved in digital asset holdings.
Rising Crime Against Foreign Residents
This incident underscores a troubling trend of sophisticated crimes targeting expatriates in Bali. The perpetrators' knowledge of cryptocurrency accounts and their methodical approach—using multiple devices to access digital wallets—suggests a degree of planning and specialized knowledge that goes beyond typical street crime.
Authorities have urged foreign residents and business owners to enhance security measures, avoid displaying valuable items, and remain vigilant about who has access to personal information regarding their financial holdings.
