Prabowo Champions Direct Air and Sea Links with Russia to Boost Economic Ties

Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto has called for the establishment of direct flight and shipping routes between Indonesia and Russia, arguing that strengthened connectivity is essential for deepening economic relations between the two nations. The proposals were announced during his attendance at the 11th Eastern Economic Forum (EEF) in Vladivostok on September 3, 2026.

Speaking at Far Eastern Federal University, Prabowo emphasized that Indonesia-Russia business cooperation has historically relied too heavily on personal relationships and informal networks. For sustainable growth, he argued, both countries need formal frameworks that provide business certainty regardless of political changes.

"The task before us is to transform personal trust into institutional trust—clear rules, reliable payments, predictable logistics, and agreements that remain valid even when officials change."

Establishing Competitive Shipping Routes

Maritime connectivity emerged as a cornerstone of Prabowo's proposal. The president specifically advocated for a direct shipping route between Vladivostok and Indonesian ports, designed to offer predictable schedules, transparent costs, and reliable insurance arrangements for cargo moving in both directions.

Such connectivity would facilitate bilateral trade by reducing shipping times and costs while improving supply chain reliability. For Indonesia's export-dependent economy, direct access to Russia's Far Eastern markets represents a significant commercial opportunity, particularly for agricultural products, minerals, and manufactured goods.
