Bali Governor Defends "Shut Up" Command During Enforcement Operation

Bali Governor Wayan Koster has moved to clarify a viral social media video showing him raising his voice and ordering a member of the public to "shut up," characterizing the incident as an isolated moment from a years-old enforcement campaign rather than a recent occurrence.

The governor made his clarification following his appearance at the 48th Plenary Session of the Bali Provincial Regional House of Representatives (DPRD) on Monday, September 7, dismissing the footage as "old history" that has been recirculated online without proper context.

Enforcement Campaign in Bingin Beach

According to Koster, the video was recorded while he personally led a demolition operation targeting illegal structures in the Bingin Beach area—specifically unlicensed villas, bars, and restaurants operating on state-owned land.

"At that time, I was very animated; those villas weren't allowed—they had to be demolished—and the bars and restaurants too. It required high energy to carry out the demolition because they were violating regulations," Koster explained, referencing the intense atmosphere required for such enforcement actions.

Context Behind the Outburst

The governor provided additional context for his sharp remark, noting that during the demolition operation, someone standing nearby interrupted proceedings with questions unrelated to the enforcement action at hand. The bystander asked about job opportunities and the fate of workers affected by the demolition.

Koster said he responded spontaneously to redirect focus back to the ongoing operation. "I said, 'Shut up!' We are focused on the demolition, yet you're thinking about the workforce. There will be a time to think about the workforce later," he stated.

The governor contended that the circulating video has been edited, removing crucial context that would clarify his actions and statements. He suggested the selective editing may have distorted public perception of the incident, presenting his reaction in isolation rather than within the framework of an active enforcement operation.
