American Gamelan Ensemble Returns to Bali for Historic Summer Tour

New York's Gamelan Dharma Swara is bringing its distinctive fusion of Balinese tradition and American innovation back to the island this July, marking a triumphant return to Bali nearly 16 years after the ensemble made history at the 2010 Bali Arts Festival.

The 31-member ensemble—comprising musicians, dancers, and composers—will perform across Bali from July 2-9, 2026, as part of a broader three-week musical tour that underscores the growing cultural exchange between Indonesian and American artists.

Breaking Barriers: A Western First at Bali Arts Festival

Gamelan Dharma Swara holds a unique distinction in the world of gamelan performance. When the group first toured Bali in 2010, it became the first Western gamelan ensemble ever invited to compete in the prestigious gong kebyar competition at the Bali Arts Festival—a remarkable achievement that demonstrated how deeply the ensemble had mastered this ancient Indonesian art form.

A Blend of Balinese Masters and American Composers

Since its establishment in 1989, Gamelan Dharma Swara has established itself as the premier gamelan ensemble in New York, performing regularly at prestigious venues including Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall, and the Asia Society. The group's repertoire reflects collaborative partnerships with Bali's most respected artists, including renowned composers I Dewa Ketut Alit and I Gusti Nyoman Darta, alongside American composers Vivian Fung, Matthew Welch, and Joel Mellin.

The ensemble's creative evolution was further enhanced in 2017 with the acquisition of contemporary Semara Dana instruments, expanding the group's sonic palette and performance capabilities.

July Performances Highlight Cultural Dialogue

The upcoming July performances will showcase Dharma Swara's diverse artistic vision, featuring traditional Balinese gamelan alongside innovative multimedia presentations that incorporate dance and puppetry. The ensemble's approach reflects a commitment to both honoring ancestral traditions and exploring new creative possibilities.
