Epic Mural Transforms Potato Head Beach Club During Major Renovation

Bali's iconic Potato Head Beach Club is undergoing one of its most significant transformations since opening in 2010, but rather than leaving blank construction walls, the venue has commissioned Brooklyn-based artist Rostarr to create a monumental 1,320-square-metre mural that now dominates the beachfront landmark.

The temporary artwork, titled 'Evolving Landscapes,' conceals ongoing refurbishment of the venue's famous Colosseum-inspired façade—a distinctive 66-metre-long, 20-metre-high wall composed of 6,500 interlocking teak window shutters. The original structure, designed by renowned Indonesian architect Andra Matin, has become Bali's most recognizable beach club silhouette since its debut 16 years ago.

A Brooklyn Artist's Signature Style Takes Center Stage

Rostarr, the artistic name of Romon Yang, is a Korean-American artist credited as a pioneer in abstract calligraphy. His distinctive monochromatic visual language—which he calls "Graphysics"—combines dynamic, flowing letterforms with geometric precision, creating visually striking black and white compositions.

The artist brings serious international credentials to the project. His work has been exhibited in major galleries across New York, Los Angeles, Miami, Seoul, Tokyo, Paris, and Milan. He has also collaborated with global brands including NIKE and The Standard Hotels, bringing commercial sophistication to his fine art practice.

The mural's scale is staggering—approximately the size of five and a half tennis courts, transforming the entire western façade into an evolving canvas that visitors witnessed being created in real time over several weeks.

A Second Collaboration With Bali's Creative Community

This isn't Rostarr's first engagement with Potato Head's ecosystem. Five years ago, he painted the Sweet Potato bio bus, a joint initiative between Potato Head and Green School Bali that combines sustainable transportation with public art.

The naming of 'Evolving Landscapes' carries layered significance. The title references the immediate transformation occurring behind the temporary canvas—the restoration of Potato Head's architectural heritage—while simultaneously commenting on Bali's broader cultural evolution and the island's shifting creative landscape.

Construction Meets Art in Bali's Premier Beach Destination
